So far the Hispanic population in this area hasn't become Americanized to the point that they ask for exorbitant wages for their work. For instance, I bought a new car recently, but due to excessive rain it was muddy and dirty after the first week of driving it. What did I do? Wash it myself? Surely you jest!
I drove to a local detail shop. They're full service wash, wax and detail and do good work. Price for my car? $125... I can do better. Suddenly, I seen the light! Can I get a witness?! I drive to a largely Mexican neighborhood known for it's day laborers,tamale makers, meth and hookers.
I honk the horn once, and my car is overwhelmed with people looking for work-the brown people. I paid two guys $8/hour each for three hours to do that work on my car. I had the supplies. How hard can that be, right? I know, I know. You're expecting me to say something like, "They ruined my car!" Alas...!
Between my minimal Spanish, internationally known curse words and sexually explicit hand signs, we communicated quite well. Like I was able to tell one guy that the wax was for the car and not to be eaten. He thought it was the gruel his mom used to feed him as a kid. Silly brown boy.
My message to you is "can't we all get along?" I love all people. Especially little brown people. Like the ones I see at Wal*Mart on Sundays. You know...Mexican Munchkins. Hell, you're thinking it too so don't be like "Oh, but how racist!!"
Tip-The tomato bin at Wal*Mart is a great place to hook up with the day labor. Peace!

nonamedufus: Good question. I wasn't very clear. Wash, wax and detail. The wax dried for about one hour before it could be removed during which time I gassed up the old lawn mower for them and broke out the rake. I planned for down time.

Here in Phoenix the infamous sheriff, Joe Arpaio, has made it illegal for us whities to employ the brownies from the parking lots of Home Depot, WalMart, etc. Now, we whities are forced to detail our own cars, strip roofs on the construction site and pick our own damn oranges. As the Caucasian father of two Hispanic kids and two Cherokee Indian kids, I can tell you that this column is dangerously close to getting you whacked over the head with a baseball bat. And they do that cheap, too.

There is a group of brown men roofing my neighbors house right now. I think I may move the car to the front and pull out some gruel. We actually have a large hispanic population here which is surprising considering how far Minnesota is from the Mexican boarder but we have the best welfare benefits by far, as long as you are a minority, illegal alien or don't want to work. For the working poor who happen to be white it really stinks. We do hold the #1 spot for somali immigrants.

My son-in-law is Hispanic, the head of 3 large hospitals, over the medical staff, head of all EMS in his state, Ireland and Northern Ireland, graduated from Stanford and taught there and is worth quite a few million.
So there are some distinctions to be made. Not all brown people are the same just as not all white, yellow, red, or any race of people are the same.

I'm still laughing at the Shinade/Don exchange! Here in Maine there are no Hispanics. Nope. Not one. In fact, there are not even any Chihuahuas here. The only minority we have is that Thai family that owns the Thai One On bar a couple of towns over. I did see some African-Americans (that's the current politically correct term, right?)over the summer on vacation here with their family. They were very nice and had very clean cars. Maybe they know you?
Deb: All in the family I always say. I also say American or black American. They have about as much African in them as I do Buwana. A good friend of mine (a honkey) married a Thai girl and they have a great Thai restaurant here! I'm sure their staff will wash your car too.
